The air conditioning system used by a Freightliner rig is significantly larger than the systems found on average automobiles. For this reason the Freightliner AC compressor is also much larger. These systems employ an evaporator that funnels the hot air exhaust emitted by the air conditioning system in order to make it more efficient. A leak in the compressor is actually a common issue among these units. It is best to let a mechanic handle the actual repair work on your air conditioner but this troubleshoot guide can help you determine if you indeed have a leak.

Crank the engine and give the truck time to warm up. The temperature gauge should be at the average operating level. Make sure the gauge for the water temperature is showing the needle either near the center mark or just below it. The majority of Freightliner rigs operate the air conditioner via the pulleys. Thus, the truck will need to be at its average temperature in order to make sure the AC is working properly.

First set the air conditioner to the coldest temperature setting possible. Then turn on the fan at low speed. ...
... The Freightliner AC compressor will make a very distinguishable sound once it begins operating. The first sound should be a hum. Then you will hear the fan as it begins to turn. If there is no sound beyond the hum then it is possible the compressor has a leak. It is also possible that the compressor failed to turn on at all. Either situation will lead to a replacement of the main compressor.

If you heard a hum and the compressor turn on then it is time for the next step. Keep the air conditioner set at the coldest temperature and turn the fan up to its highest speed. Put your hand or face near one of the vents to see if the air coming out is cold. If the air is warm or near the same temperature as the air around you then it likely needs a new charge of coolant. A trained and certified mechanic should be sought out to refill the refrigerant level in to the compressor. Keeping the Freightliner AC compressor adequately filled will help extend its useful life.

Precautions
The most common reason for a leak in the Freightliner AC compressor is found in the seal between the air compressor and cooling line. Basically, the refrigerant material is slowly seeping out of the leak while the compressor keeps turning. A lack of refrigerant will cause the compressor to overheat and stop working.

The temperature gauge for the water pump is normally located directly in the middle of the truck’s dash. This makes it easy to keep tabs on the temperature level in order to avoid overheating.

If you find a leak in the Freightliner AC compressor stop using the air conditioner. Continued used can cause significant damage and result in the need to replace either the compressor or major repair work on the air conditioner system.
