Uncle Mo showed why he was so talked about as a two year old. That special something he displayed in winning two Grade 1’s en route to his being crowned two year old champion of 2010 shone through on Saturday as he splashed home in the mud to take the Grade 2 Kelso by three lengths over Grade 1 winner Jackson Bend.
Sent off as the 3-5 favorite, he sat comfortably on the lead until the far turn, when Jackson Bend came up to challenge him. Everyone was waiting to see whether we would witness the birth of a star or if we would see a disappointment. Uncle Mo responded like a champion and repelled a bid from Jackson Bend, opening up on him impressively. As he motored down the stretch, he held Jackson Bend comfortably at bay to the wire, stopping the clock in a very fast 133.82
After Havre de Grace romped by 8 ¼ lengths in the Grade 1 Beldame, the talk of the Breeders’ Cup will inevitably focus on Uncle Mo vs. Havre de Grace for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Her trainer Larry Jones expressed a bit of concern after Uncle Mo’s freakishly fast race in the Kelso and he knows that beating the two year old champion ...
... will be no easy task.
Uncle Mo’s owner Mike Repole seems to have his heart set on starting both Travers winner Stay Thirsty and Uncle Mo both take a shot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and his trainer Todd Pletcher has confirmed that he is set to contest the Classic at Churchill Downs next month. Perhaps it is not an unwise decision – after all, why not take two shots in a $5 million dollar race? Uncle Mo has now beaten older horses and has taken his place as a force to reckoned with in the handicap division and he now has a shot to take Horse of the Year honors, but he must win the Classic.
Should rain be in the forecast for this year’s Breeders’ Cup, Uncle Mo will now have an additional advantage, having shown that he can run as well on the mud as he ever did on a dry surface. It is unusual for a horse to prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic off a seven furlong race (the King’s Bishop) and then a one mile race. No doubt the path he will take is not typical, but perhaps he is just that good. It would have been nice to see how strong he would have been a dry fast surface and at a distance of nine furlongs at least.
Uncle Mo paid $3.20 to win in the Kelso.
