Pos Solutions: Label Printers And Barcode Scanners
A point of sales system is essential equipment in retail and hospitality industries. A POS system typically includes a computer, monitor, label printer, cash drawer, customer display pole, credit card reader and barcode scanner. Each component has its own importance in the system and the process of sale and purchase can become difficult in the absence of these components.
These components come in varieties and discussed below are types of label printers and barcode scanners-
Label Printers and Their Types:
A label printer simplifies the production of labels, which make the products informative and make them more appealing. It uses self-adhesive label material and tags with built-in keyboards and displays and produce high-quality labels. There are different types of label printer-
Desktop label printers- As the name suggests, a desktop label printer is compact enough to be kept on a desktop. It is usually designed for light- to medium-duty use and are quite affordable. Moreover, they are not noisy like the traditional label printers.
Commercial label printers- These type of printers are generally ...
... meant for medium-duty use and can produce higher output.
Industrial label printers- Meant for heavy-duty use, industrial label printers are generally used in factories and production units. They can noisy and are meant to produce large output.
Industrial portable label printers- These are generally used for heavy-duty use on location, where there is no access to electricity. Example of such location is construction site.
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers- These are specialised printers that print and encode RFID tags at the same time.
Personal label printers- They are mostly handheld or small desktop devices and are meant for small office use.
Barcode Scanners and Their Types:
A barcode scanner is an electronic device meant for reading printed barcodes. They can scan all the information about the product that is encoded in the barcode and transmit the information into readable information. Barcode scanners can be of different types, including-
Laser scanners- These scanners use a laser beam as the light source and employ a reciprocating mirror or a rotating prism to scan the laser beam back and forth across the bar codes. The light emitted by the laser reader varies in brightness and a data pattern.
Pen-type scanners- Like laser scanners, pen-type scanners also have a light source and a photodiode that is placed next to each other in the tip of a pen. When using a pen-type scanner, a waveform is generated that is used to interpret the barcode.
Camera-based scanners- These are the new type of barcode scanners that use a camera and image processing techniques to decode the barcode.
CCD scanners- Several tiny light sensors are used in CCD readers, each of which is used to measure the intensity of the light immediately in front of it.
Omni-directional barcode scanners- These scanners are useful in reading barcodes that vary in directions or are arranged as a symbol. They can move to any direction that the barcode is in.
Barcode scanners can also be categorised as handheld, fixed-position, PDA, automatic and cordless scanners.
