No matter what type of guitar you play, it needs to be looked after and maintained. Whether it is a bass guitar or an electric guitar, it requires some tender caring in order to remain in top condition. There are some main factors to take into consideration on a regular basis to ensure that your guitar maintains its original quality.

Always make sure you wipe your guitar down after playing. Dust and sweat residue can build up causing mildew which in turn affects the tone of the guitar. Use a soft, clean cloth and if necessary you can even give the guitar a slight polish with quality polishing liquid but do make sure it is of good quality. Make sure you wipe the strings down as well, to prolong their quality as sweat and dust build up on the strings as well.

Another good habit to establish is ensuring that you always store your guitar correctly. Never allow it to be over exposed to either direct sunlight or extreme cold. Store it in its case or if you do not wish to pack it into the case daily, in a dry and airy cupboard. Even when you do store your guitar always make sure your case is well preserved and sealed ...
... so as to not allow the elements in. Also be very careful not to scratch your guitar especially on items of your clothing, such as belt buckles etc.

Even electric guitars such as the fender electric guitar need to be taken to have professional tuning done. Make sure to do this so as not to harm your guitar. Usually you will find the place you purchased the guitar from offering such services, be sure to check up on this at the time of purchase.

As guitars are so versatile and convenient it is easy to forget that they too require care and attention in order to maintain the quality of sound. Do play your guitar regularly as a neglected guitar will naturally rust and lose its tone. However, do not forget to do all the regular quality checks listed above to maintain your guitar. If you follow these steps, you will in the long run save a lot on maintenance.
