Stair lifts are designed to help the user easily climb stairs. They are wonderful for aiding the mobility impaired to have the independence to go up and down stairs without needing to be lifted and carried. If you have chosen to have a stair lift installed, then your life is about to get much easier.

However, before you make your purchase decision, one thing that you need to determine is whether you will use a battery powered or an electrical powered stair lift. There are, of course, pros and cons for each model, and knowing what these are, and which model will benefit you the most, should be included in your choice.

Electrical powered stair lifts are the most popular choice. They are installed the same as battery powered units, with a tracking system on the wall of the staircase or on the staircase railing. The only main difference is that they are powered by an electrical outlet, preferably out of reach of the unit. They normally run on a 110 to 115 grounded VAC outlet. The only main problem with the electrical unit is that if you have a power outage, then the unit will not work. This can be solved by adding ...
... a battery back-up package, or making sure that one is included within the unit. Many units do not have a battery back-up, so especially if your area is prone to outages, it would be a good idea to find a unit that has a back-up, or to check and see if your current unit can be upgraded to include one.

With battery powered stair lifts, you do not have to worry about power outages, however, replacing batteries can prove to be somewhat expensive. This can be especially true if you use the stair lift quite often. Just be sure, if you have decided on a battery powered unit, to ask the dealer how much battery life the unit is expected to get. Also, it may be a good idea to check on the price of replacement batteries. If you have to replace the batteries several times each year, and they are expensive, then finding an electrical unit with a battery back-up may still prove to be more cost worthy.

No matter which power option you choose, finding a stair lift of good quality and safety is of the utmost importance. You may need to spend just a little extra to ensure that the unit is safe and effective, but it will be well worth extra money spend to know that the stair lift you have chosen will transport you safely.
