In Chinese legends, tea appeared as early as B.C. 2700. The earliest monograph on tea is the Book of Tea, which was written by Lu Yu in Tang dynasty. In addition, this book is also the earliest monograph on tea in the whole world history. Till now, Book of Tea has been translated into more than ten languages around the world.
The widespread of tea around the common people was after the Tang dynasty, which was closely related with the popularity of Buddhism. In some temples, the Buddhist monks not only had tea alone, but also held tea meetings. We can say that tea was vinculum of keeping touch with friends.

In the temples, there was a set of rules on having tea. In addition, there were relevant etiquettes, having tea locations and special staff who were in charge of the tea-related things. Moreover, the temples would prepare the tea for the guests. However, the Buddhist monks would prepare different quality teas for the different people with different social statuses, which could be seen as the reflection of the Feudal hierarchy system.
The teas that the Buddhist monks had were different from the teas that common people had. They saw drinking tea as one part of their temple and religion life. Therefore, we can call it the culture of tea in the Buddhism. In the long history of having tea, even the tea competition appeared in the temples, which was most popular in the Song dynasty.
