Laser Eye Surgery
A surgery performed on the eye or more precisely on the adnexa of the eye is typically known as eye surgery. These days laser technology is used to do the task and thus the term Laser eye surgery. It is a type of refractive surgery and helps in correcting various visual conditions like myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. The person who does the surgery is known as ophthalmologist.
The technique was first used by a Columbian based Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer in the year 1950. He used to alter the shape or cornea by cutting thin flaps in it. He also researched to find out the area of cornea that must be left unaltered in order to gain stable long term results. In the 1970's the technique was further developed and spoke like incisions were cut into the edge of cornea so that it gets flat in the center.
An alternate for Glasses
Use of glasses to enhance the visual capabilities is not new to people. More recently, people have also started using contact lenses which provide the same result as glasses but are really helpful in a number of other ways like they are less affected by weather, provide a much ...
... wider field of vision and are much easier to carry. Laser eye surgery does the job even better by correcting the error in eye and thus one would not need to use lenses or spectacles ever again.
How does it work?
In most simple words, reshaping of cornea is done by using laser and the person might be able to see things clearly without using glasses. The patient is instructed to stop wearing the contact lenses five to 42 days before the surgery. A careful inspection of the cornea is done and the irregularities are found out. The process is carried out while the person is totally awake and sometimes mild sedatives are given to him. The eye to be operated is held at a place by using certain medical tools and a flap is created. This flap is very thin in width and is left attached to the eye at one edge. One might not be able to view anything at this point of time and the vision would be completely blurry. A laser is used to restructure the cornea part. Once completed the flap is put back into its position by the surgeon and is checked for presence of any kind of impurity. Natural adhesives present in the eye helps in keeling the flap at its place and healing is completed within a few weeks. The procedure is perfected by certain companies like Eye Laser and has helped in improving vision of a number of patients.
Side Effects of Laser Surgery
There are a few side effects of laser surgery like slight discomfort, irritation, red spots on the white area of eye, infection, dry eye and flap loss. However, these are really nothing in front of the great advantage that laser surgery is providing. Companies like Eye Laser provides necessary post-surgery care that helps one heal quickly without any side effects.
With the advancement of technology, the cost of conducting the laser surgery has also reduced greatly in last few years. It is surely a safe and easy method of restoring good vision.
