Learn How To Sew
Sewing machines are wonderful inventions, they have decreased the time it takes to sew a skirt or jacket together. Before sewing machines were invented and clothing was made by hand it took much longer than a couple of hours to finish a sewing project. The benefits of knowing how to sew clothing and quilts are numerous, beginning with making your own clothes. By making your own clothes, you will save money by making and wearing things you enjoy and have created.
The basic techniques of sewing include the following stitches: straight or curved seams, backstitching, sewing elastic in cuffs and waists of pants or skirts and the sewing on of buttons. The easiest stitch is to learn how to sew are the straight stitch and then the reverse stitch. Curved stitches are harder, but one trick is to practice on circles drawn on paper, without thread in the machine. That way, you save money on thread and still get practice in moving the paper under the machine and coordinating your hand and foot movements.
The first step is to get the equipment needed to sew. This consists of a sewing machine, thread, scissors, sewing needles ...
... for the machine and sewing pins to hold the fabric together until it is sewn. Sewing machines all are basically the same, they move a needle up and down the fabric, interlocking the bottom thread from the bobbin to the upper thread that goes through the needle. This interlocking system of thread makes a stitch, which is what holds two pieces of fabric together.
Next, unpack your machine and look at it to make sure all the pieces are together. It is a good idea to take the machine to a place that will make sure it is clean and adjusted properly before using it. Read the manual and ask questions from a friend who knows how to sew. Sometimes seeing or being shown how to thread the machine or change the bobbin is a great help.
The next steps involve the fabric and patterns. If you have not taken a class or had help sewing, it is a good idea to refresh your memory on how to sew. Practice on a scrap piece of material because it is better if you make a mistake on it rather than a seam of a dress or pants and have to redo the sewing. If that happens, it is alright, everyone has had to rip out a seam at one time or other.
The basic sewing stitches allow you to sew your own pajama pants, pillows, pillow cases, curtains and many other numerous projects. The thrill of going to a fabric store and finding the perfect fabric that you fall in love with and making something for yourself or as gifts for others in your life is something that will give you great joy as well as become a great hobby.
