Mexico Real Estate – Small-town Lakefront Options

In the Mexico real estate market, one of the most loved options over the past few decades has been that of lakefront towns. These include more established markets like Lake Chapala real estate and other communities like Valle de Bravo real estate which still remain largely undiscovered by international buyers. The following is a brief description of a few examples.

Lake Chapala – As a lake with a few quaint villages on its shore, surrounded by wooded hills, this is Mexico’s classic lakefront retirement destination. It has been famous as a vacation destination for over a hundred years, when it was a favorite for then president Porfirio Diaz and the Mexican establishment elite. Since then, it has continued to be a favorite for Mexico’s middle and upper class, but has also grown to become what is perhaps the largest community of American and Canadian retirees in Mexico.

... minutes away from Mexico’s second largest city, Guadalajara. This allows for very easy access to large malls, international stores, state-of-the-art hospitals and one of the country’s best-connected international airports. The towns along the lakeshore are also home to a number of conveniences like Walmart.

Morelia & Lake Patzcuaro – Morelia is a beautiful colonial city which also offers a large number of modern conveniences; about 30 minutes away is Lake Patzcuaro which is home to a number of villages that are as old as the city, if not older. The towns are known for preserving traditions that pre-date the Spanish conquest 500 years ago; on the other hand, popularity among Mexican cottage owners has brought nice roads, funds to keep up the landmarks of the villages and to keep up good restaurants. Since it remains largely undiscovered by international buyers, one of the most attractive points is the pricing.

Valle de Bravo – Valle de Bravo is another lakefront village; like the other two it is near enough to a larger city to offer close access to modern conveniences. The mid-sized city of Toluca is about an hour away, while the upscale new development of Mexico City’s west end with its nice malls and international restaurants is about 2 hours.

Valle de Bravo itself is defined by small, white homes with red-clay roofs on the hillside overlooking the lake. In addition to lakefront homes, many cottagers enjoy a ranch lifestyle in the surrounding countryside. Again, prices remain very accessible.

Any buyer interested in owning real estate in a lakefront town in Mexico should consult a real estate expert to explore their options and choose the community most suitable to their needs.
