The need for commercial printing is very obvious with the boom of quite a number of commercial printing companies. Some people however tend to move a step back in getting a printing service from a commercial printing company when asked to create a design.

Have you checked the printing costs for your particular need yet? Are you financially prepared?
It is always wise to be prepared for any battle and the best way to win the battle is come prepared by knowing your opponent’s weakness and strategy think of this as your commercial printing (Your printers are not your opponent for your information, they are your ally). Learn from those who won the battle by reviewing past commercial print clients and the printers as well. Compare rates and find the one with the right package that can give you all you need and still produces quality. It is always wise to compare rates first before choosing and gather the price range so when you meet with your printers you are armed with updated information.

List your print needs on a paper.
A more organized way to proceed with (before your discussion with the printer) ...
... is to have a list of everything you need to print. Make sure everything including your ideas and certain printing choices that you may have seen from other printers. if you can take pictures the better so you can show it to the printer of your choosing. It is always best to be ready when your printer starts asking you what you need. This will be less time for you to explain your needs and more time to pick out more stuff to enhance the prints.

Write down the text for your prints.
Start writing. Remember the dimensions of your printing material to estimate just how much text you can put in it without stuffing in too much that perpetuates you to minimize the font size to fit everything in. Ask your printer the best readable font size to use for your particular print size, remember that the readable font size for an A4 paper differs greatly from a ceiling to floor length print size.

While you are the designing phase, there are certain areas you may need to take a little more time to pick out -

• Fonts – readable, not to big and not too small either

• Colors – enticing, mood enhancing

• Pictures – tells a story, explains what the print is about

Start polishing your art file.
Your printers (if they are professional) will tell you what to do starting from the designing to the submission of the file. If they have particular programs and file types they pointed out, follow it. if you are having difficulty achieving the required file type ask the assistance of your printer so you commit less errors. They will probably share a copy of the program they use or tell you where to get them.

Before you submit, take a Pre-flight check once again on the art file for submission.
Check everything from the file type, the imbedded font file, the used color model, the printing dimensions and the crop marks. This will save you and your commercial printing company a little more time to work on other things or focus on other commercial printing requirements because you don’t have to send the file back and forth just for editing.
