The task of oil painting artist looks simple to a layman but when one goes deep into the steps that are involved in bringing about a great oil painting to the fore, one will definitely appreciate the efforts of the artist.

The painting techniques and methods differ greatly from one oil painting artist to another and also are different in art paintings for sale from the same painter at different points in time. The process begins with selecting the surface, which can be pressed wood, canvas or cardboard. Canvas is the most popular surface that is stretched to the wooden frame. The canvas can be made up of linen or cotton fabric depending upon the cost factor. The canvas is stretched against the wooden frame and stapled to give a strong base. Then the oil painting artist prepares ground to separate the canvas from the acidic effect of the colour by using glue made of rabbit skin and chalk. Layers of priming is also used which is also alternated with applying gesso. Artwork oil paintings then involve drawing an outline for the painting using the pigment made of linseed oil. The linseed oil can be replaced with other oils depending upon their drying nature on the surface. The use of different oils for the outline gives different effects giving assorted effect to the art gallery oil painting. Next step adopted is the use of brushes. Size of the brush and fibre used in the brush create various effects. Some may also make use of metal blades or knives. Then extra oil paints are removed using sponges, rags and cotton swabs or even fingers are used. Layer painting is an old technique which involves painting in different layers using different oil-paint ratios to give spectacular effects.

Then different shades of lighting can be applied to the painting using the pendant fixtures. Metals like halogen or xenon are used in varied voltages for task lighting purpose which gives stunning effect to certain level of work areas like countertops or kitchen or tables. Wall grazing is yet another technique used to give great effects to the shadows in the painting. Accent lighting, wall grazing and wall washing are some of the modern techniques adopted by oil painting artist to give additional visual effect to their art work.
