The Samsung Galaxy S2 remains the best selling handset of 2011 thanks to a near faultless blend of style and functionality. Samsung is about to face fresh competition from smartphone super brand HTC with their forthcoming Windows 7 device the Titan. Can Samsung keep hold of their crown or is the newcomer looking like a real threat?

Samsung get off to a good start when we take a look at the design of the two phones. The S2 still has no equal when it comes to looks with its 8.5mm depth making it the slimmest phone currently available. The new HTC is quite impressive in this area and measures just 9.9mm but it is the wafer thin profile of the Galaxy S2 which catches the eye. In fairness to HTC the new Titan does feel like a very robust and well built model but a side effect to this is that it does weigh in heavier than the S2. The HTC has an overall weight of 160 grammes which is considerably more than the 116 grammes offered by the Samsung. What it really does boil down to in this comparison is whether you will opt for build quality over looks but we, just like many consumers, would opt for the style of the Samsung ...
... every time. Both of these models offer users high quality screens. The 4.3 Super AMOLED display on the Samsung remains one of the very best available and is only bettered by Apples wonderful Retina display. With a 480 x 800 resolution and the capability of displaying 16 million colours the screen gives images that are both vivid and that offer a natural depth. The new Titan offers a 4.7 inch screen which makes it the largest available on any smartphone but HTC have opted to use the same resolution as the Samsung. The result of this is that the Titan offers a much lower pixels per inch rating of 199 as compared to the superior 217 offered on the Galaxy S2.

It seems as though the HTC Titan is struggling to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S2 and this trend continues when we look at the on board storage offered on the two models. The HTC offers a great 16GB of internal storage together with a respectable 512MB of RAM memory but the Samsung totally eclipses it in this department. The S2 is available in both a 16GB and 32GB variety and both of these double the RAM to 1GB meaning that the handset generally operates at a much faster pace as well as having the potential to store more material. Both models also offer very fast dual core processors with the Samsung using a 1.2Ghz chip and the HTC a 1.5Ghz unit. Despite the differences in speed expect both handsets to perform at a similar pace thanks to the larger screen on the HTC placing more strain upon the chips used inside the device.

There is no doubt that the HTC Titan will prove a hugely popular device upon its release but it cannot match the all round brilliance offered by the Samsung Galaxy S2. It seems as though we may have to wait a while longer to find a handset that can claim the Samsungs place as king of the smartphones.
