When you are planning on visiting London and have worked out all of the different sights and sounds that you want to experience. Now you need to plan how you are going to get around, and should be aware that travel in the city doesn't come cheap, especially to those who are not used to the high price of the British Stirling. Thankfully, however, there are a few things you could do to get between your places of interest without emptying your wallet.

Depending on how long you intend to stay, it might be a good idea to get a travelcard. You can either buy these online before you arrive or can simply get one on arrival. They come in different shapes and sizes, giving you a single day, or several days, of unlimited travel around different zones in the city. This way of travelling is generally much cheaper than purchasing individual tube and bus tickets, particularly if you have a lot to see and do.

Never consider renting a car to be used in the city itself. Congestion charges are significant and you will generally find that this is the most expensive way of travelling in the city, while also being the slowest as well. ...
... If you do intend to take day trips out of the city, however, car hire is generally a good idea, giving you more freedom and often helping you save money on expensive train tickets.

Depending on where you are based, there is nothing to say that you cannot walk. A lot of the major landmarks in London are fairly centrally based, meaning that you can quite easily get between them on foot. In fact, this is often a great way of taking in more of the city than you might otherwise witness, especially if you chose to squeeze yourself onto the tube.

If you do get a travelcard and have the choice between the tube and the bus, try to go with the bus, particularly if it's a sunny day. If you get on a double decker you will see a whole lot more of the city and may even come across some unexpected landmarks that you can then check out.

A top tip would be to get onto the number 23 if possible and get to the upper deck. This bus will guide you between many of the top city landmarks at a much lower cost than you'd get with an actual tour.
