Understanding What To Expect In French Living
For many the allure of France is not the weather or the cost of living, or even the spectacular view. According to the U. S. State Department about 90,000 Americans opt for French living because they are drawn by the culture. Their unique way of thinking and doing things as well as the way they have of finding pleasure in life and living moment by moment is very appealing to many.
For those considering a move to France they will find a new opportunity to discover what's important to one, personally, then seizing the moment to take pleasure in it. Although this type of move is difficult for many, it is well worth the effort. Even after taking the initiative to learn about the culture and perfect the language, one is in for many surprises during the acculturation process. It can even seem perplexing at first, but as soon as one settles in these experiences will grow less frequent the more one is exposed to the culture. Understanding that the role one adopts as an "outsider" will be life-long can help to alleviate some of the discomfiture that may occur.
One important thing to remember is that the French are bound ...
... by rules which have a long history. In many countries rules for grammar and etiquette are part of the social norm. However, in this country there are rules for everything and if one is unfamiliar with them they are often shunned. By understanding the "system of ratified codes" that identifies those who are foreign-born, one can shed most of the inadvertent rule-breaking which makes many stand out.
One important thing to remember is that Americans and the French are polar opposites in some respects. Americans, in striving for harmony, will smile and agree in order to avoid disagreements. The French, on the other hand, thrive on conflict. As a result, they love to express individuality and embrace differences which keep life from becoming boring.
Conversation alone is a form of entertainment. It's like watching a drama or dance. Disagreements generate conversational exchange. Turn-taking is expected with witty, brief comments followed by intent listening then acknowledgment of the comments made by others. Never do exchanges include smiling as in agreement. In fact, not smiling or making eye contact when talking is strictly prohibited as it is seen as an invasion of privacy.
Another thing they may appear a bit unusual to outsiders is the fact they close the door upon entering a room. This does not mean a barrier has been established or that a person wants to be left alone. The French expect one to knock if they wish entry and expect visitors not to explore beyond the living and dining rooms without asking permission.
One of the best parts of French living is the beauty of the people who live there. It is said that once one acquires a French friend, they are a friend for life and will go to any extremes to support the relationship. In fact, relationships, just as food are the driving forces behind the country. For those contemplating a move to that country they will find a life filled with experiences unlike any found elsewhere.
