Although LED headlights have been around for a while now LEDs have not completely replaced the bulbs in headlights. This is because there are still technical challenges to be overcome for that to happen. But LEDs are getting brighter and they are edging closer to being used for all automotive lighting functions. They have already made themselves the best choice for other functions such as turn signal lights and LED tail lights are very well established as a popular option now.

So what is this pending technical challenge? Well it has to do with the advantages and disadvantages of producing heat and of not producing heat when light is generated. Sounds confusing, doesn't it? Well it actually is a bit complicated. First, though we feel LEDs do not generate heat, they actually do, it is just that the the heat is not generated at the front where the light is generated, the heat is generated at the back where the circuitry is. And this places a limit on how powerful an LED can be used. If it is too powerful then heat dissipation from the rear becomes too much and there it is no good cost effective solution for that as of now. ...
... But that is not all, even the fact that LEDs do not produce heat at the front has its disadvantages. You may feel surprised initially but that is true. And the problem is that in very cold conditions the heat generated in the front would be able to thaw out any snow or ice that covered the headlight but with the cool LEDs that does not happen. So cars with LED headlights will require an alternative heating mechanism to get that done.

Of course the research is on going and we can only be sure that even more exciting options will emerge as people overcome technical hindrances. After all LEDs do offer some great advantages such as low battery consumption, long life and they are able to switch and and off very fast. It is the reason why top end cars use LEDs for automotive lighting as much as possible. You can know more at www.ilovebodykits.com.
