Each country or region defines these categories in different ways, according to the availability, usage and its design. In India, high quality and high tech products are sought after, particularly in the private sector.

Medical equipment is a product which is used by physicians or surgeons for medical purposes in patients, in diagnosis, therapy or surgery. Medical equipments include a wide range of products varying in complexity, design and application, and to name a few are tongue depressors, medical thermometers, blood sugar meters, pace makers, fibrin scaffolds, MRI machines, CT scan, stents, X-ray machines and many other medically used equipments. Manufacturers of medical equipments should maintain a consistent and systematic quality system which, along with other quality assurance activities should provide services to their clients on regular basis, to be able to maintain the equipments rightfully, which means extending a helping hand to the hospitals to be of quality use during the right time. A biomedical equipment technician (BMET) is an imperative component of the healthcare system. They basically are called by patients or the guardians of the patients who use the medical equipments at home, which they cannot rectify and find a solution to when it stops working. But they are employed primarily by hospitals. BMETs are the people who are responsible for maintaining a facility's medical equipment.

Companies that develop medical equipments have to keep many precautions in mind while manufacturing, as the devices have to be manufactured for the people so that they don’t harm them instead of being useful and help them identify the core cause of their problem.
