Headboards are found attached to the head of the bed. In earlier times, the headboards separated the bed from the cold wall and helped the sleeper to remain warm. The headboard acted as a barrier and allowed the cold air to settle on the floor rather than on the bed and the sleeper. In modern times, with the introduction of insulation, the use of the headboard has changed. It is now more commonly used to keep the pillows in and prevent it from falling off the bed and very often as a decorative piece.

Headboards And Interior Decoration

When families finally obtain their dream home, great care and time is spent on decorating it to their specifications keeping in mind their particular needs. When furnishing the bedroom, the bed is the centerpiece of the room and therefore the need to make the bed more aesthetic rather than purely utilitarian takes precedence. The skill with which a designer decorates a bedroom and the headboard in particular and the impression it creates can make or break their career.

Types Of Headboards

Headboards ...
... come in different shapes and material. It could be made of wood, fabric, leather, or metal. Depending upon the budget of the family, the quality of wood used differs. People with big budgets often use skilled craftsmen to carve intricate designs on their headboards. When fabric is used for the headboard, velour or damask is used to finish the piece. They are very often beautifully carved or painted upon in keeping with the aesthetics of the room.

Uses Of Headboards

Sometimes the headboards are designed in such a way that it serves as a storage space to store the extra pillows and blankets. However, if a springing board is available at the foot of the bed, then that could be used as the storage section. The headboards could be used as a back and head support to enable the person to sit up in bed and read or watch TV or even have breakfast in bed. In such cases, the height of the headboard varies and will have to be custom made depending on the size of the individual using the bed. Sometimes shelves are attached to headboards to store books or CDs or in the case of a hospital bed to store important patient care equipment. Electrical switches and such could also be attached to the headboard to make all gadgets in the room easily accessible from the bed itself.
