A sport betting is the activity of gambling on the outcome of a sporting event and placing a wager on the outcome. But the operator of sports betting doesn’t control the objects of sport. Two basic aspects of sports betting are: Knowledge or experience about the sports & Luck. From past many decades betting on sports has become an important service industry in many countries.
You can’t bet on a sporting event unless & until you have clear knowledge about the sports betting terms, rules, types, legality & the basics. Let’s discuss here some important Sports betting jargon. The terms used in sports betting may looks complex but once you have the knowledge you are ready to join the action in no time & may also win. Though the list of jargon is very long but we will discuss here some important jargon only.
Action - Action is simply means to have a bet. For example, "Joe wants in on the action" or "Show Joe where the action is".
Bookmaker or Bookie: A person or any organization who accepts bets on sporting events at an agreed odd.

Chalk or Favorite & Chalk player: The person who usually plays the favored teams & rarely or never gambled on the underdogs.
Cover - In sports betting the team who wins against the pointspread is known as Cover.
Dime & Dime line: A Dime is equal to $1000.00 sports betting wager. Dime line –the difference between the Chalk & underdog on the money line is 10 cent. In short it is a line where the juice is 10%.
Handicap & Handicapper- In sports betting, handicap means to analyze & predict the outcome of sporting events & the one who studies, rates & bet on sporting event is known as Handicapper.
Handle - It is a sport wagering term that means the total amount of money wagered for the person, or establishment, accepting bets.
Juice or Vigorish or Vig- It is the commission paid to bookmakers on losing bets for the privileged of betting. Also known as the vig, short form of vigorish.
Money line: odds expressed in terms of money. With money odds, whenever there is a minus (-) you lay that amount to win a hundred dollars, where there is a plus (+) you get that amount for every hundred dollars wagered
Middle: To win both sides of the same contest in sports betting event. Wagering on the underdog at one point spread and the favorite at a different point spread and winning both sides.
Odds & Odds makers: It is usually expressed as the ratio of probability that an event will happen to the probability that it will not happen. Usually expressed as a pairs of integers. The person who creates the odds on the sporting event is known as odds makers.
Off the board: In sports betting “off the board” refers to a game that no wagers are being accepted on.
Over & under: A sport bet in which the bettor guesses that the combined point total of two teams will be above a specified total is known as over. Under is a wager in which the bettor guesses that the total points scored by two teams will be under a certain figure.
The spread & Point spread - Spread means the predicted scoring differential between two opponents as quoted by a sports book. Point Spread is a handicap that is placed on the superior team in term of points for gambling purposes
Push: It is a tied wager, where the player neither wins their wager or losses it.
Sportsbook - A person or company that accepts bets on sporting events. An establishment that takes bets, also known as a book & an individual who takes bets is a bookie.
Teaser: It is a bet that consists of two or more basketball or football teams and all of the teams have to cover the point spread for the bettor to win.
