If you ask me whether decoding a guitar scale is scary, my answer will be negative. However, now many people out there do find them daunting. Often it happens that you are not sure about where to get started and how to go about the whole process. This leads to an unorganized understanding of the scales and you start fearing the guitar lessons that you must be fond of.

There are hundreds of scale worksheets available in various music books and online music lessons; however, the best way to decode the guitar scale nuances is by choosing to have a teacher. Whether your teacher is right in front of you in your house or teaching you online, he or she can guide you to decipher the scales in the right way.

When you want to understand a guitar scale better, you must start being acquainted with the various terms associated with it. Music is a language and therefore, you must concentrate on building up the vocabulary; this marks the starting point of communicating fluently in any language you wish to learn. Be familiar with “melodic patterns,” “sequences,” “licks,” “melodies” and “rhythmic motifs.” ...

You must always keep in mind that there are no short cuts to success. Practice; practice hard so that you can master the scales to the utmost level. Else what is the use of getting the scales decoded?

It is important that you start your guitar learning lessons with the Major scale, the Major Pentatonic Scale and the Minor Pentatonic Scale. These scales are integral to your understanding of the other scales. More or less, all the other scales are drawn from the Major scale. So, if you are able to decode the Major guitar scale, you can decode all the others faster. Once you have cracked the Major Pentatonic Scale and the Minor Pentatonic Scale, learning all the other scales become so much easier for you.
