Rubber gaskets fill the space between two mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression. Gaskets and seals fill irregularities to ensure that moisture, heat and cold are sealed inside. Gaskets and seals made of rubber are preferred as they should be yielding to some degree to cover any mild irregularities on the surface. A few gaskets require an application of sealant directly to the gasket surface to function properly. A rubber gasket seal is often an integral part of an electronic assembly. Rubber gaskets are required to protect the end product from environmental conditions that it is exposed to during use.
Designs of rubber gaskets vary according to parameters like chemical contact; need to withstand heat and cold variations, industrial usage and budget. Physical dimensions will vary with specific applications. The fundamental concept underlying the improved sealability for constant seating stress gaskets takes into account these factors. ...
... Suppose the flange sealing surfaces are capable of attaining a seal, the sealing elements need to be compatible with the process fluid and application. Sufficient gasket seating stress has to be achieved on installation necessary to affect a seal, then the possibility of the gasket leaking in-service is greatly reduced or eliminated altogether.
An important application of gaskets and seals is in the automotive industry. Remember, if your gaskets and seals break often then it could be that they do not match the specifications of your vehicle. Such mismatch leads to easy and faster damage of the gaskets and thereby problems in the functioning of the engine. Also regular checks of automotive gaskets and seals are necessary to show up any damages before it becomes a challenge to set it to rights. In the present auto industry and with the modern vehicle engines, use of aluminum in cylinder is the main reason behind leaks caused in gaskets and seals, as it causes more stress due to greater thermal expansion rate.
