For the second straight year, Gio Ponti has been denied the top placing in the Arlington Million. Last year it came at the hands of Debussy and this year Cape Blanco got the better of him.
Cape Blanco scored a decisive victory over nine rivals in the 29th running of the Arlington Million. The son of champion Galileo, Cape Blanco settled in with the second flight of horses as frontrunner Mission Approved led the way through relatively soft fractions of 24.81 for the opening quarter, 50.26 for the half mile, and a pedestrian 116.04 after three quarters of a mile.
Gio Ponti was in tight behind horses as they rounded the far turn while Cape Blanco was several lengths ahead of him at least. The winner got first run on him, and the 2009 Arlington Million winner, striking the front at the head of the stretch, while Gio Ponti was bottled up behind horses and even appeared to check lightly at one point. Finally in mid stretch he got free and was able to make his run, but it was too late as Cape Blanco had too large a lead and too much left.
Dean’s Kitten held on for third place.

Cape Blanco paid $6.20 to win. The full order of finish in the Million was Wigmore Hall in fourth, then Rahystrada, Tajaaweed, Mission Approved, Zack Hall, and finishing last was General Perfect.
