Ziyarid set out for the lead and remained there for all but the final sixteenth of a mile when it was clear that the favorite Treasure Beach was going to be tough to hold off. The favorite tracked Ziyarid down the back stretch, never letting him very far out of his sights, with Suntracer and Banned racing side by side in fourth.

As they turned into the stretch the two favorites were neck and neck, with Ziyarid holding the narrowest of leads, and Wilcox Inn sitting chilly behind those two ready to run.

Treasure Beach and Ziyarid kicked away from the rest by mid stretch, and Treasure Beach inched past Ziyarid in the closing strides to take the Grade 1 event.

Ziyarid set slow fractions of 25.43 seconds for the first quarter-mile, 50.09 for the half mile, and 1:14.69 after six furlongs. The final time 2:03:91 and the winner paid $5.00.

Trainer Aiden O’Brien scored a win later in the Grade 1 Arlington Million, giving him a rare Secretariat Stakes – Arlington Million double, a feat accomplished only by the late Bobby Frankel in 2002.
