Back To School Tips For Parents To Help Children Adjust
A new year at school, new surrounding and new setting generally makes children anxious and emotionally upset after a long period of summer holidays and merry-making. Whether it is preschool or kindergarten or first grade, they get worried for back to school time. Here is where parents’ participation plays a vital role in getting them into school. Parents and other family members can successful help their children adjust to new transition. Read through this article to find out how parents can bring a positive change in their children towards education and learning.
• Make your child feel safe and secure. Do not try hard on them. Make smooth transitions between new school settings to emotional problems to their fears and separation from you. This makes them independent and grow over time.
• Be excited and interested in the coming changes. If you are energized, your child will be.
• Arrange a back to school party before the school starts and invite all your child’s friends and other kids who will join your child at school. Plan some craft making, drawing, games, singing, dancing programs which are ...
... full of entertainment and educational. This certainly boosts your child’s spirit for school and learning. Even this helps your child see familiar faces at school when he/she begins going to school.
• Friendship make children enjoy school time. Encourage your child make new friends. Teach him social skills like playing together, smiling, talking to other children, saying thank you/sorry and participating in teams/clubs which will help him greatly make new friendships. Even parents can help child make friends by arranging playdates with neighbour kids, involving in summer activities, talking with other parents in parks, libraries, etc.
• Make a visit to the school with your child in advance and introduce him to the new teachers/ early childhood professionals.
• Start bit of daily routines several weeks before like bedtime, eating at the correct time, bath, etc.
• Generally certain problems arise in the first few days of schooling even when every preparation looks ok. So be prepared to solve them and work out with your child’s fears and emotional issues.
• Speak to your child every day after school starts what he/she did at school, what he enjoyed the most, what he liked most, friends, etc to make him feel that you are interested in his life and he means a lot to you. Give positive guidance to his new experiences in school.
• Never ridicule your child for anything. Instead support and encourage him. Understand him and try to solve his problems in a positive way.
• Involve with your child in doing home work, games and activities. Make sure the activities are suitable for him, exciting and challenging.
• Talk to teachers about your child’s interests, likes and dislikes. It makes teachers understand your child better and take the necessary steps.
• Go through certain childcare books and online sites. It might not seem so helping but when you turn pages one by one, for sure you are going to feel that why haven’t you read all this earlier.
• Lastly your patience is most important to make your child cope well with back to school. This in turn will help you how to approach new challenges in your child’s life and make him successful in life.
