Grooming Your American Bulldog
American bulldogs do not shed a lot and don’t need too much grooming since they have a coarse and short fur. Therefore they don’t need very frequent brushing or bathing. However, it would still be important for you to follow a grooming regimen to ensure your dog looks great.
Brushing
American bulldogs do not have very demanding coats but they should still be brushed often. Use a brush with soft bristled so that it wouldn’t nick the skin. Test out the brush on your skin to see if it is harsh before using it on your dog. If your dog seems to be in pain or irritated, you may want to try another softer brush. You can also use brushing gloves to remove the shed hair without pain. Start brushing from the head and towards the rump to follow the fur grain.
Bathing Your Dog
Like any other dog, American bulldogs also need to be occasionally bathed. If your puppy is messy and likes to play outdoors in sand or mud you will have to bathe him more frequently. However, avoid over bathing since it will only strip off essential minerals and oils from the skin and damage the coat. A bath every month will ...
... be sufficient for your dog if he isn’t too messy during his playtime. Bathing your dog is actually a very simple process since the coat is coarse, thin and very short. In order to bathe your dog, run the bath with some warm water. If the weather is warm you can also bathe him outdoors if the water temperature is right.
After your dog is saturated with water work shampoo in his coat. There are several different types of shampoos available in stores so you can test a few and fine one that seems to be the most suitable. Ensure that you clean well around the paws and anywhere the bacteria and dirt may accumulate. Once he is well shampooed, rinse the coat immediately. Rinse well since leftover shampoo or soap can cause the skin to itch. Once you think that the shampoo is well rinsed off, it would be time to dry your dog. You can take your dog outside for a walk in the garden in warm weather to dry him. Because of shorter coats, these dogs don’t take long to dry off after bathing. If you want, you can also use a towel to dry off the coat. Keep a separate towel for your dog and wash it regularly, after every bath to ensure that it is clean for use.
If you begin grooming your puppy from an early age, he would be used to the process and would not create any problems. Grooming American bulldogs is fairly easy and does not require much time.
