The providers then make up the lost profits over the lifetime of the contract signed by the customer which says, for any kind of services they would only contact the company and not switch to any other network provider. To protect those profits, the wireless providers configure a "subsidy lock" into each BlackBerry. The subsidy lock prevents the BlackBerry from being used on another provider's network.

Customers would want to switch to other network from the provided network which comes locked in the cell phone not allowing the customer to enjoy the facilities provided by other network providers which any unlocked phone customer can enjoy. Every blackberry has a different code for unlocking. Most providers use unlock codes which are mostly generated from the blackberry’s IMEI number. There are companies which are formed to basically jailbreak i.e. unlock the locked mobiles. These companies usually run websites where one can enter the IMEI number of that specific handset only and receive an unlock code which is further used to unlock the handset. Thankfully, receiving an unlock code is free of cost and many a times the entire process of unlocking can be done for free. Specialized software exists and can be purchased online, that erase the subsidy locking code from GSM BlackBerry phones. One can install this software on the PC and plug the BlackBerry into its docking cradle or into a USB sync cable and proceed with the unlocking procedures.
