Magnus Effect can be defined as an incident in which a spinning object flying in a fluid forms a maelstrom of fluid around itself and as a result experiences a perpendicular force to the line of action. Actually, when a spinning object passes through a fluid it deviates from its straight path due to the pressure differences that creates in the fluid because of the fluctuations in the velocity induced by the spinning object. Magnus Effect is solely responsible for the bended motion of a spinning ball in different ball sports. The spinning missiles are also affected by it and it is used in rotor ships and flettner aero planes.

Magnus Effect can be seen in sports like tennis, volleyball, football, golf, cricket, table tennis, marker balls and baseball. It generates a force on the spinning cylindrical or spherical objects from the side when the object is immersed in a fluid and there is a relative motion among the fluid and the spinning object. CF Rotor is said to be a hollow spinning column which is made up of metal. Collapsible Flettner is the abbreviation of CF Rotor. It is fitted on the ship’s deck and is used to convert the wind power into forward thrust. This thrust is almost perpendicular to the direction of the wind. The principle working on the rotor ship is the principle of propulsion and Magnus effect. Magnus effect is a thrust which operates on a spinning device. This device makes the wind direction favorable to the vessel and as a result the vessel moves forward. The main advantage of CF Rotor is that it can fold or collapse itself automatically at the right time. This folding and collapsing feature is very important during loading operations and when the rotor ship navigates through limited areas.

Earlier, the rotor ships had standard flettner rotor and these were non-collapsible; as a result there were many problems in passing under the bridges, loading and unloading operations. But now, with the CF Rotor it is possible to overcome all these problems. It is an advanced technology and is controlled by software. There is no need for any additional crew for operating it. It is usually controlled from the bridge. This system is helpful in loading and unloading operations and passing under the bridge due to its collapsibility feature. It can even bear bad weather conditions. It is easy to maintain and the installations are within the contract. It is most suitable to be fitted in build rotor designs; however it can even be fitted to the existing rotors through retrofitting. It takes about 14 days for retrofitting. The process is possible in almost all major ports.

Thus, rotor ship works on the principle of propulsion with the help of Magnus effect and cf rotor is highly in demand due to its advantages.
