I have been trading for a few years now and I have realized that I never stop learning something new or different. The market is a very unique type of teacher. I am sure you remember some of your teachers from College, High School and even Grade School. Some have stayed in our memories because they were either really nice or sweet and some because they were mean and strict. The market is the sweet, nice, mean and strict teacher we all had. We got all of that in one!

As I learn to understand more and more about my teacher, I understand more and more about myself. Automated trading has made things more immediate and faster. It is amazing to know that there are thousands of trading computers operating at any given time in different markets all over the world and yet, the market does what the market does. Technology has changed but the market has not.

Human psychology is still the same. Yes, we might think differently, we might have better trading computers, but we still have the same human needs. We all need food, shelter, love and acceptance. Some of these needs are reflected in our trading. ...
... We might be looking for acceptance in the market. We might want to validate our ego and feel important. I am sure you have heard of “self-sabotage” and “revenge trading.” We are still humans trying to be happy and feel better about ourselves.

It is important to have this awareness when you are trading. Our Trading Computers can become a tool that can inflict a rollercoaster of all kinds of emotions and acknowledging this when is happening is crucial to be a good trader.

Examining your feelings and needs can make a huge difference on your trading. Knowing that you will not fulfill any of them by trading should be something you repeat to yourself over and over. I have seen traders who once they are triggered, they start abusing their trading computers by hitting their keyboards, slapping the monitors, or killing the mouse….I know this sounds funny but when emotions take over, traders can really go mad.

Don’t let that happen to you. Do your homework; prepare yourself for every trading session. Don’t let people or media control your emotions and trading decisions. Sometimes it is best to ignore all the news and analysts opinions before trading. Be kind to yourself and your trading computer. After all, it is just a machine and the market will always be the market no matter what happens to you.
