Most local commercial printing companies are owned by a person or group of persons who are living in the vicinity. That is because it is quite hard to manage a printing company if you are living somewhere else. You cannot just easily visit the office if you need to. And even if you have a manager and supervisor, it would also be good to be able to visit your office regularly in order to check if operations are in place. That is why you may notice that a local commercial printer would probably take up the name of the owner’s last name. It is common practice, especially those printing presses that had been in business for several decades already.

There is this one man however, that started his local commercial printing business from scratch. He was a mere negative stripper in a printing company that was owned by a wealthy family in his city. But since he was a graduate from a local university with a bachelor’s degree, he was eventually promoted as a proofreader. He did not have interest in sales so he never got a position in air-conditioned office but was rather bumped ...
... to different positions in the production area.

But there are no regrets there. Because of the movement that he experienced around the printing area, he learned how to do things and experienced them first-hand. He knew how to operate the printing press grade camera, to develop films and transfer images onto plates. He learned how to operate the image setter and how to generate CMYK films for full-color printing. He knew how to operate the letterpress, the one-color, the two-color, and the four-color offset machines. He also knows how to laminate printed pages, to maneuver the big paper cutter, and even to die cut materials.

He became so proficient with printing press operations that when he lost his job, he was armed with the knowledge that he needed to start his own printing operations. Since he was thrifty, he was able to save up a big chunk of his salary. And combined with his separation pay, he did have quite some money to start his printing business. He also made a loan from his mother just so he did have extra money for operational expenses, as he was just starting.

With his wife and niece, he opened up shop with a couple of computers and a unit of one-color offset machine. His popularity immediately grew because he worked well and was good to his customers. He was not flamboyant like most sales persons are, but he had a kind heart and was diligent in his work. He was also able to bring down costs because he did not have a flashy office but maintained simple operations so that his overhead expenses are not that high.

Not long after that he added more machines and more people. His former officemates were now working for him. But since he knows them and their usual problems with their previous employer, he was more considerate.

And now, he is a very successful local commercial printer. He has even overtaken other local commercial printing companies that had been existence for a long time in terms of sales and volume of printing. He now owns a commercial building but still lives simply.
