Of course Scotland is notable as one of the most prominent salmon fishing locations, but regions like Devon, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are extremely popular too.

Once you get to your idyllic location, how do you start? Fishing for salmon is a lot different than normal fishing. The team from Ocean Tackle Store have provided some words of wisdom to be beneficial towards your salmon fishing experience.

First of all, the area for salmon fishing is very important. Of course we already know that some areas in Britain are a lot better than others, Scotland having the highest Salmon populated rivers and lakes and oceans. Its best to use a fishery that is enthusiastic in the preservation of the Salmon population in their lake or river. These fisheries will usually have RSPCA support and all the fish will be healthy on a sustainable diet, ensuring they are happy salmon.

The time of year can also have an impact on how successful you are fishing, with spring and autumn being more approved times of the year. Also the best times of the day is when there is phases of low light on cloudy ...
... days. Bright and sunny weather will encourage the salmon to hide and assemble deep in the holes of the river. Of course if you can find one of these hiding places with an abundance of salmon inside you can fish there all day long!

Fishing with a partner is always beneficial as you can work as a team. Whilst one of you fishes the other can help spot salmon, or climb onto a riverbank and observe the behaviour of the fish, locating correctly where they are. Of course when you have found the salmon remain calm and very still, salmon can get frightened very easily and will flee, so always be patient. When you feel a tug reel it in.

Of course having the right fishing tackle always helps and it changes from region to region, angler to angler. Always make sure your rod is strong enough, there is nothing worse than letting a huge salmon escape just because your equipment wasn't up to the task in hand. Salmon fishing of course is always made substantially easier by using correct equipment, so always ask for advice from the staff at the individual fisheries.

Fly-fishing equipment and lines is always essential, with a variety of flies and a range of bait. You will also require a pair of waders for the deep water in most rivers if you want to reach the prime locations. Also don't forget a landing net as this will greatly reduce your chances of losing the salmon whilst reeling it into shore. Make sure finally that you have a permit to fish in the river or lake or you could face legal charges.

Salmon are the most difficult of fish species to capture so its always best to practice your technique before you go to a salmon fishery. Of course using the right equipment always helps and can assist and make easier that all important catch of the day.
