The standards of ISO 14001 are framed to make you aware of the aspects of your business impacting the environment and the environmental laws applicable to your environmental effects. The standards are set for the improvement in the situation of your business environment and improve the environmental management to attain the standards and review the improvements regularly for their continuation. But for certifying the performance of some organization in this regard an ISO14001 Certification Body has to be created to perform this duty.

Certain aspects have to be considered while appointing an ISO 14001certification body.

In fact certification is not required to implement the standards of ISO 14001 by any organization as it is the commitment of that organization to improve the environmental conditions in and around its periphery and improving its efficiency to maintain the situation. • The certification issued by the selected certification body should be recognized by the organization’s customers otherwise it is of no use. It will remain like cheap things usually appear to be costly while maintaining them.

• You should ensure the presence of experienced auditors with the certification body who is conversant with the activities of the organization to which they are issuing the certificates.

• The ISO 14001 certification body should ensure the implementation of its norms through Conformity assessments, audits and certification for environmental management system.

• The certification body should be recognized by some accreditation committee or an official approval should be sought out as to be competent to issue a certificate for environmental management in the organizations from an accreditation body of local or national level.

If an ISO14001 certification body is not accredited by some competent authority then it is a matter of suspicion for the reliability of the certificate issued by such body. The accreditation of such certification bodies is neither mandatory nor obligatory in several countries. The certifying bodies with extensive reputation in certain sector of business may not need some accreditation but it becomes necessary for the body which needs the confirmation of its competency in their sector.
