Getting Your New Born To Sleep And Stay Asleep
If only there were a magic wand that parents could wave to get their babies to sleep – alas there isn’t and getting babies to sleep and helping them to sleep longer remains one of the most confounding, challenging and frustrating jobs of new parents. Babies don’t know how to fall asleep when they are tired; nor can they fall asleep when their parents want it.
Some of the most tried and tested tips for getting baby to sleep are –
Don’t let the baby get overtired
One of the reasons why a child may find it difficult to fall sleep is if he or she is overtired. So learn to look for signs of drowsiness and before the baby gets really cranky and before reaching the point of exhaustion, try to settle him or her for sleeping.
Understand that babies are variable
You may want baby to take a nap at a particular time each day and settle down for the night at a set time each evening but the baby will rarely oblige. It isn’t deliberate; babies simply have their own inner rhythms that do not conform ...
... to predictable patterns. As some days baby may want to eat less, some days he or she may want to sleep less and that these variations are to be expected.
Soothe your baby
Whether it is rocking baby, singing or nursing, the transition from waking to sleeping has to be made and the baby falls asleep, feeling secure and lulled by the feeling of being soothed to sleep. Many experts prescribe that the baby be allowed to self soothe so that there is no assistance required from a caregiver to help the baby fall asleep. However more experts are getting around to the view that the cry-it-out method has less merit than when a child is soothed to sleep.
Figure out where baby settles best
In the interests of parental rest as well as baby being able to fall back to sleep when he or she awakens in the night, figure out where baby sleeps best. Whether it is in a crib next to your bed, whether it is in the cot in the nursery or whether it is snugly cuddled in the parental bed. If a baby is comfortable while sleeping, baby is that much less likely to wake up. Even when awake, seeing himself in a comforting place may make it easier for him to drift back to sleep.
Have a nighttime drill
Firstly make sure that baby is as comfy as she can be – a full tummy (but not over-full) and hopefully after a bowel movement so that she has no other discomforts. Then develop a bedtime routine. Having a sponge, a change of clothes, a fresh diaper, dimmed lights, speaking softly or soft music playing – certain activities and a creation of a certain ambience will help baby to form sleep associations so that she may become more willing and able to drift off.
The bottom line is that each baby is vastly different and what parents need to do is to figure out which of the above baby sleep products and tips help their baby get to sleep.
