The HP LTO4 tape represents HP’s fourth generation of LTO cartridges, the first tape of its type capable of storing up to 800GB of native data (1.6 TB compressed) per cartridge, while offering features such as hardware based encryption and Data Rate Matching (DRM). 1GB of data can be recorded on the tape within 8.3 seconds, which results in a high transfer speed of 120MB/sec for the native and 240MB/sec for the compressed, while ensuring efficient handling of data and transfer information. High capacity HP LTO4 media tape enables business enterprises to improve the backup efficiency by significantly reducing people interference when handling tapes.

Data encryption algorithm featured in HP LTO ultrium-4 technology is AES 256 bit, which provides robust security capable of preventing the most sensitive data from being disclosed. By increasing the capacity of next generation LTO 4 tape by almost double, customers will now require a lesser number of cartridges which will reduce operational costs as well as time consumed for daily routine backups. The HP LTO4, also known as the Ultrium 4, has full read and write support with ...
... LTO3 media and the ability to read a LTO2 cartridge. A smoother base film and smaller magnetic particles, also allows more data to be saved in the same amount of tape.

Other than DRM(Data Rate Matching )and hardware data encryption, the HP LTO4 tape drive employs various other new features including internal head cleaning system, which ensures a long durable life of up to 30 years and/or 260 full back ups. WORM media is supported, whereas the high-speed HP LTO4 drives are also compatible with a number of leading software applications and servers from HP, CA, Dell, IBM, Legato and Tivoli.

A One-Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR) mechanism allows users to quickly recover an entire operating system using a single cartridge, substantially reducing both cost and time. Increased margin between Early Warning End of Media (EWEOM) and End of Media (EOM) also improves performance and archival life. Data stored on a HP LTO4 WORM tape cannot be erased but may be added to.

The HP LTO4 also features a LTO-CM (Linear Tape Open Cartridge Memory) module, which stores drive-related data including information about past errors and usage history. Information can be read from the LTO cartridge memory with the help of a LTO-CM reader, which presents it in a user friendly manner. Most LTO tape drives are equipped with the LTO-CM reader. However, for those which don’t feature any, can use an external reader.

The HP LTO4’s media is qualified to be used with both HP and non-HP products. The HP LTO4 backup tapes are tested in Hewlett-Packard’s media laboratory to ensure high levels of quality, performance, security and efficiency. Customers, after using the HP LTO4 tape drive and media, will feel a significant improvement in both backup and restore functions, and the challenge of managing large amounts of sensitive data will be met in a cost effective manner.
