If you were to ask me a few years back if I needed an extra monitor or monitors, I would have said: no, what for? I would have never thought about having more than my traditional setup. Time has changed and so have we. Now, I cannot imagine not having at least 2 monitors or 3 monitors. If you are a trader like me, you definitely need a multi monitor trading computer.

I personally have 8 monitors. I know people who have more than that and I feel that with these many monitors my trading and browsing has become more effective. I have talked to other traders and a lot of them seem curious about how many monitors do they really need to be more effective. I personally believe that part of it is personal preference, and another part depends on the trading they do and the type information they need at all times.

When thinking about a multi monitor trading computer, you can over think it or simplify it too much. A lot of traders feed their ego by having a lot of monitors. It can become a competition among them, so the question sounds like this: So Bill, how many monitors do you have? You can feel the sense of ...
... pride when they outnumber their colleagues. Do not get stuck on this idea and let go of your ego. I promise you, the market will take care of big egos; you don’t need to have lost of monitors to prove this.

So how do you decide how many monitors do you need? I would say 99% of traders if not 100% have a multi monitor trading computer. First, think about the type of trader you are. Are you a day trader who is in front of the screen all day long? If so, I am sure you need all kinds of data available to you, especially if you are a technical trader. Examine your daily behavior. What do you need to have available? Maybe your charting software, your news wire, you platform expanded on at least a couple of screens, your email, your personal browsing. Try to be as practical as you can be and maybe do a process of elimination as well. As we all know, the internet at times can be a distraction, so maybe you don’t need that much at once. Remember that your main purpose is to trade and make money, so the more concentrated you are on what you are doing, the better.

If you are a swing or long term trader, then need for more monitors lessens. You probably set your trades once a week, once a month or even between longer periods. In this case your Multi monitor trading computer should be set up depending on your personal preferences and style.

Now that we talked about the number of monitors, there is a lot to talk about kinds, brands and requirements.
