Environment And Waste Management Strategies Followed By Chemplast Sanmar
State-of-the-art Technologies
As a philosophy, Chemplast has always installed and operated waste treatment facilities which are state–of–the–art at any given point of time and has undertaken continuous improvement of these facilities. This has culminated in Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facilities across its chemical plants.
Pioneer in implementing Zero Liquid Discharge
Chemplast is amongst the first Chemical companies in India to install a Zero Liquid Discharge facility with a heavy capital investment. This system ensures that, after the effluents are treated in a comprehensive Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), process quality water is recovered for reuse as a resource conservation initiative. The small quantity (approx 10%) of rejects from this plant is also treated and reused ensuring Zero Discharge of liquid effluent.
Large Storage System
Even in the rare case that the equipment in the Zero Liquid Discharge facility is down for maintenance work (preventive or breakdown), the liquid effluent is stored in large storage tanks. Once the machines are back to working mode, these liquids ...
... are then treated fully and properly recovered in the ZLD.
Industry Awards
The stringent measures taken for treatment of liquids are recognized by prestigious industry bodies like CII. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) presented Chemplast with 2 awards towards management and best case study in water conservation & management in 2010. This award was due to the successful implementation of ZLD in chemical sector.
Constant Inspection
Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), the key statutory body for managing pollution in the state, conducts regular and extensive inspection of all plants, including the plants of Chemplast Sanmar. Chemplast is one of the companies which uploads various parameters in a live manner to the “CARE AIR” center at TNPCB, Chennai. This arrangement enables TNPCB to monitor “live” performance of Chemplast’s plants. Similar transparency is also available to the public at plant locations by way of Chemplast’s prominent and live display of parameters at the factory gate.
Environmental Surveillance Study
A Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) approved independent agency has carried out an environmental inspection study covering all three major areas: Water, Soil and Air. Specific tests were done to check the various wells around the plant and also the ground water. The results obtained for the last several years indicate that there is no contamination of surrounding area including wells due to Chemplast operations.
