According to the report of Australia Daily, the racial group said that that due to Australia's poor image abroad, the enrollment capacity of the international education industry — Australia’s most important export industry, was damaged. The group called on Australians to face this problem and to make every effort to improve the experiences of overseas students in Australia, thus reshaping Australia's good image.

CERD Graeme Innes of CERD (Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination) said since the being attacked accidents of international students were frequently seen in newspapers in 2009, the image of Australia was greatly reduced. Therefore, it maybe need several years for Australia's international education industry rebuild the good reputation abroad. Innes is currently drafting the program concerning the minimum welfare standards of overseas students in Australia. He pointed out that in order to wash the stain, the whole society should joint make joint efforts.

On Tuesday, at the Building an International Education Strategy Conference held in Melbourne, Innes said, “First, we must acknowledge ...
... the image of Australia is poor. And this draft (concerning minimum welfare standards) is certainly not the remedy to solve all the problems. The strategy should include the following content: recognize the rights of international students and the importance of positive experiences in Australia. And of course, these cannot happen overnight.”

In the past two years, due to the overwhelming negative reports concerning the safety of overseas students and racial discrimination, as well as the policy reforms including the visa system reform, a huge number of potential overseas students were lost. Besides, the record –breaking Australian dollar made an enhanced effect. As a result, the amount of this year’s overseas students decreased by over 9% than that of 2010.

Innes said, people always tended to remember and spread bad experiences rather than the positive side. And this is one of the reasons of Australia’s poor image. He pointed out that Australian universities and educational institutions should be more concerned about the welfare of students outside school and ensure their personal safety and happy life in the community.

The minimum welfare standards of the Australian students which involve overseas students, educational sectors and the government are expected to be published this year.
