Sindhi matrimony is a lot like all other Indian marriages in rituals and celebrations. Sindhi is a socio-ethnic group originating from Sind, a province in Pakistan. After 1947, the Hindu Sindhis migrated to India just as Indian Muslims migrated to Pakistan settled in Sind. Sindhi culture is highly influenced by Sufism. The Sufi saint, Jhulelal, is highly revered in the community.

PRE WEDDING SINDHI RITUALS

Janya

The ceremony of sacred thread (Janya) is essential for all Hindu marriages. Only the groom wears the sacred thread along with saffron dress and performs yagna with the priest. No Sindhi matrimony is complete without performing sacred thread ceremony.

Kachchi misri

The Kachchi Misri is informal engagement where the shaguns (token gifts) are exchanged by the groom and the bride's families. The shagun offers five types of fruits and kharchi (money) for the bride and groom.

Pakki mishri

It is the formal announce of an engagement typical of a Sindhi matrimony. The rings are exchanged between the couple in the presence of a priest. The Ganesh Puja is performed followed by an ...
... Ardas. The girl's family also brings five kilos of misri in a clay pot that is opened by the boy's mother.

Berana

Berana is a satsang where the Sindhi God, Jhulelal is worshipped. It is usually held ten days before the wedding.

Lada

It is a nice ceremony where all the women in the neighborhood of the groom are invited to a night of merriment and singing. During the night, the matrimony songs are sung to the accompaniment of dholak beats.

Tih

The ceremony of Tih is held one day before the matrimony where a priest from the bride's family performs puja and announces lagana.

Mehndi

The Mehndi ceremony is an important part of Sindhi Matrimony. It is time when ladies of the bride's house sit together and beautify the bride. Professional Mehndi artists make beautiful designs in henna on the hands of the bride and other women.

Saagri

The groom's family members visit the bride showering her with flowers. It is a ritual exclusive to Sindhi matrimony. The purpose of the ceremony is to acquaint the bride with the groom's family. The groom also visits the bride's house where he showered with garlands.

Ghari puja

No matrimony in the community is complete with the performance of Ghari puja. It is a long ritual performed at the respective homes of both bride and groom. On the occasion women of the house grind wheat symbolizing that house will always be prosperous.

WEDDING DAY SINDHI RITUALS

Baraat

The baraat is like any other Indian matrimony where the groom has a sehra attached to his forehead and sits on the horse. The groom's mother lights a lamp for the household deity. The baraat then leaves dancing to the tunes of music.

THE SINDHI WEDDING CEREMONY

The brother of the bride washes the feet of both groom and bride. Then the priest starts chanting and the couple takes pheras. The Sindhi matrimony has only four pheras. After performing Kanyadhan, the ritual of Saptapadi is performed where the couple places their right foot on seven small piles of rice.
