The Humble Business Card

“Let me have your card” we say when we meet a new business contact. It’s such a common phrase that is uttered countless times a day across the business world, and one that we take for granted. The humble business card is also taken for granted. Yet it is such a key thing for our businesses. Okay, so it must carry the right information – telephone, email, mailing address – but it is much more than that. The trouble is, that many of us do take them for granted. Graphic Designers and Printers will have heard phrases like “Just knock up some quick cards for me” and “just a basic design will do” – which explains why so many of us end up with cards that look like they were designed in the 70s or 80s. I certainly would not like my business image to look “basic”.
A business card provides much more than just contact information – it plays a vital role in the marketing process. So your cards need to be of the highest quality, and set you apart from your competitors. Ensure that the font sizes, styles, and colours are visually appealing, yet easy to read. Having professional guidance with these tasks really ...
... helps.
In today’s image savvy world the importance of image is more important than ever before. We need to present our business in a way that people will remember so that they are more likely to come back for more. Just read the research from the Design Council. They tell us that businesses that use design well do not need to compete on price as much as other businesses. Just look at Apple and Mercedes to back up that statement.
The world of business card printing is a minefield to those of us who have no knowledge of the industry. What colour print do I choose? What fonts? What kind of card? Do I have a photo on my card? Double-sided or single-sided? Should the design be modern or traditional? The choices are endless. Most reputable printershave a Design Team who will guide you through the steps so that your business card reflects the nature of your business, and more importantly, makes you stand out from today’s clutter.
Nowadays we all have access to a computer and it appears so easy to rustle up some artwork for our business cards. Some of us even ask for the services of Auntie Louise, ‘coz she’s handy on a computer. But there’s a lot more to it than this. Your business card represents your company, and is often seen when you are not there, therefore it needs to do a branding and communication job for you. This is why advertising agencies and graphic design companies exist and make a lot of money doing what they do best.
You’re probably thinking I’m trying to get you to spend a fortune on design – far from it. Good design does not cost as much as you may think, and in the long run it will cost you less than bad design. In fact bad design could really damage your business. First impressions count, so next time you hand over that business card, just think to yourself, “Is this little piece of card working hard for me or not?
