Causes Of Itchy Dog Conditions

There are a number of reasons why your pooch may be displaying itchy dog conditions. If you have had him since he was a puppy the chances are he has genetic predisposition for itching and scratching, especially if he is a lab, retriever, or a West Highland terrier. He will have areas where his fur doesn’t grow and there can often be a secondary yeast infection. This means he may not be able to leave it alone, making it more problematical.

If you have recently changed your dog’s diet and he is scratching himself, then he may have afood allergy. Very often it is the wheat or other grains used in dog food that causes allergies but it could also an issue from another source.

Allergic reaction to flea bites can cause some of the worst itching problems for dogs, so it is absolutely essential that flea control be monitored.

A certain amount of Malassezia fungus can live on a dog’s skin and it will not cause any problems until the animal gets a scratch or bite, then the Malassezia fungus goes to work and can reap problems. It’s that fungus which often gives an otherwise healthy dog’s coat a smell musty. ...

Depending on the situation, you may be able to get a topical cream to help your pet, but a trip to the vet may be necessary for proper treatment.

Dogs should not smell awful or scratch themselves all the time. Some breeds may smell musty because they have a large amount of Malassezia living on their skin. The dog may never have a problem unless he is bitten by a flea and starts to scratch.

There are a number of organic baths, soaps and lotions that can keep your dog healthy. Remember that when your dog licks himself this can create stomach issues as well as other health problems.
