The term "hipster" is frequently used as an insult, lobbed in the direction of anyone deemed pretentious or the slightest bit "artsy". Further confusing the issue, hipsters themselves will, owing to their "indier-than-thou" attitude. One year, hipsters may wear distressed jeans and t-shirts with ironic vintage logos; the next year, self-professed hipsters will stop wearing those because they're available at every Wal-Mart in America, while the latecomers who start wearing those ''will still be labeled hipsters'' by outsiders. Which only further contributes to the decay of the label.
For whatever reason, hipsters don't seem to enjoy being called hipsters. This is why the term "hipster" usually tends to carry a negative connotation. Most hipsters tend to trash talk other hipsters (fictional or real) to attempt to justify they AREN'T hipsters, when they are... it's all really confusing, honestly. Especially since hipstersdom is the most populace 'label' of people, and most youngin'z in our age bracket fall into this genre.

All of your Facebook ...
... photos look like they're taken from the viewpoint of an anonymous third party. At the very least, you're wearing shades and looking down and away from the camera.
You use the term "deck" to refer to things you think are cool (since saying cool is so not cool). You also say "Po-mo" to refer to things that are "post-modern."
Your core wardrobe includes retro sunglasses, ironic T's and distressed shoulder strap messenger bags, clothes from American Apparel or TheUrbanApparel.com
You live solely off coffee and cigarettes (and enjoy the occasional Pabst Blue Ribbon beer from the local dive bar).
You wish you lived in Williamsburg/Brooklyn, N.Y. because that’s where you “belong”
You've "discovered" a band before they went "mainstream" and refuse to listen to them after they have, claiming they've "sold out."
You have less than 3 percent body fat and you can't fit two fingers in the waistband of your skinny jeans.
You have an overall level of nonchalance and air of superiority … the general public is referred to as "squares," and you take every chance you get to judge them harshly.
You think you are better than everyone because of 1-8
You'd never actually admit to being a hipster!!!!
