Remaining Strong After Surgery With Bariatric Diet
After a person has bariatric surgery, commonly called gastric bypass, they need to follow a strict bariatric diet in order to protect their health. Gastric bypass can aid overweight people who have not been able to lose weight but need to do so in order to protect their health. The surgery has a serious impact on your body and the digestive system since it actually removes parts of the stomach. Even if the surgery itself goes very well, there is still concern for complications arising if the patient does not stick to the right diet. Though each individual case is different, the following information is the general diet for bariatric surgery post-op patients.
The stomach shrinks and cannot digest like normal following surgery; if pressure is put on it, serious problems could occur. That is the reason for which water, juice, and other liquids are the only things a patient can consume for roughly a week following surgery. The stomach should not be forced to expand during this period, so even the intake of liquids needs to be limited to a level that will not stretch the stomach.
One week after surgery, the ...
... bariatric diet is able to include pureed foods that have been thoroughly blended. Doctors usually tell their patients to eat foods that have high amounts of protein to help their bodies get strong and recover as quickly as possible. The stomach can handle eggs, cheeses, and yogurt safely during this period and will be able to heal thanks to the healthy contents of these foods. If a solid food is being blended for the patient, care should be taken to eliminate any large chunks from the puree; even a small bit of solid food could wreak havoc on their sensitive stomachs.
With a doctor's consent, a patient can begin consuming soft foods again as part of their recovery process with a bariatric diet. Meat pastes, soft fruit, rice, and cottage cheese are common foods that patients eat during this period. After only eating liquid meals for a couple weeks, patients have to take it easy even with soft foods at first.
The bariatric diet ends when solid foods are okay for the patient again. But a smart person will not move to this stage of the recovery diet until they have spoken with their doctor. And, even when they are able to eat normally again, they have to be careful not to eat junk foods that will make them gain weight again.
