In earlier days, wedding used to be fun filled ceremonies, and all the family members and relatives celebrated the spirit of wedding in a festive mood. A wedding was the loveliest time, when family and friends gathered to celebrate the bonding between their loved one. With the passage of time, the meaning for wedding has changed and so have the customs related to it.

Due to the hectic schedules, people do not have much time nowadays, they cannot stay for long ceremonies and perform rituals, even if they desire. In fact, the young generation is even unaware of the details of the various rituals that are performed at wedding.

No community in India is untouched with this virus now, be it a Bengali Marriage. Few years back, Bengali marriages used to be a three day long ceremony, where the families were completely involved in wedding ceremonies and enjoyed wedding. Families used to take great pride in such cultural events; however, the situation has changed now.

Due to shortage of time and space, families are bound to cut-short the wedding ...
... rituals and ceremonies. In fact, people themselves prefer short ceremonies and like to get things done faster. Nevertheless, this trend is helpful for the people with strict and hectic life style, as some of the additional ceremonies consume ample time and money and can be avoided.

Earlier parents used to search bride and groom on their own, with the help of other family members and relatives, but nowadays, online Bengali matrimonial sites play this role. There are various matrimonial sites that act as matchmakers and help to find the perfect match. These Bengali matrimonials websites are dedicated to provide the families with the ideal match. These websites have search options and list of prospective bride and groom. The details of any girl or boy from any caste, religion, education or job can be found on these websites. The sites have turned out to be a great help for the parents to find an ideal match for their son or daughter.

Bengali families are now open to inter caste marriages too and are allowing their children to marry in non-Bengali communities. Since wedding is all about understanding and trust, Bengalis don’t mind finding right partners irrespective of their caste or creed. In West Bengal, Marwari community also prevails, after Bengalis. The Marwari’s and other communities residing in West Bengal tend to adopt the Bengali culture, and due to this reason, an increasing trend of marriages between Bengalis and Marwari’s or other communities can also be seen.

The inter caste marriage always include a mix of rituals of both bride and groom’s sides, presenting a beautiful amalgamation of cultures. With such kind of weddings, new customs are also being introduced in Bengali matrimonies.

The way of celebrating wedding has also changed. Earlier, people used to celebrate Bengali marriage at their homes only, but now the trend has changed and the wedding organizing work is given to event management teams or wedding planners. These planners make the things easy and help to have a hassle-free wedding, where hosts do not have to worry about the decoration, catering or dressing up bride/groom.

Change in attire and jewellery can also be seen, where brides and grooms love to wear designer clothes. Sarees have been replaced by designer lehengas, designer suits and sherwani have taken over dhoti and kurta and traditional Shehnai players are replaced by DJ music.

Similarly, many other changes have been experienced in the traditional Bengali matrimonies. Still, wedding has not lost its charm and people love to have a great time in spite of the how short the ceremony is or what kind of music is played.
