What To Expect To Recoup For Property Damage In A Car Accident Case
There are several types of vehicle insurance coverage’s that can pay for damages after a car accident collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist policies. When it comes to meaning of property damage in the eyes of the insurance companies it is defined as damage to a vehicle whether it be a car, truck, motorcycle or SUV.
What is recoverable after an accident?
If your vehicle is in an accident and you have insurance your insurance company will pay to have your car fixed if the damage is not too great or they may “total” your vehicle depending on the amount of damage. If an insurance company “totals” your vehicle the repairs are considered too great and the vehicle is considered a complete and total loss. In these cases the insured party is paid a cash value for the vehicle. This value is the cost to replace the vehicle with a same type and make. The value is calculated based on the vehicles age and wear and tear. Usually a vehicle is deemed totaled when the repair costs exceed certain percentages of the vehicles worth. This percentage number can be different for different insurance companies. ...
... The totaled percentages range from about 51% to 90%.
Totaled or not totaled
Many times when vehicles are considered totaled it is possible you may disagree. Normally in the case of a totaled vehicle you are paid by a check the actual cash value for your vehicle via the insurance company. Then the vehicle is taken to a salvage yard and many times will be auctioned off for parts. Sometimes people feel that the value of the vehicle is not calculated correctly and the cash seems like a less than equitable deal to some. Your contract with your insurance company basically says you agree that the insurance company will not pay out more than the vehicle is worth. Sometimes people are so attached to their vehicles they will take the cash payout from the insurance company minus the deductibles, fees if any and minus what the insurance company would get from the junk yard and take the damaged car. They then can make the repairs to the car themselves or by a repair facility. If you feel you want to do this you need to make it know to your insurance adjuster and be sure you know exactly the charges involved before making this choice. Typically, once the vehicle is taken by the insurance company and moved to a salvage yard it is too late.
