Insuring a teen driver can be quite problematic for most parents. Not because it's impossible to do - there are countless insurance companies to get quotes from for a teen driver. The main problem is that insuring such a driver can be really costly. In fact, drivers who are under 25 tend to have the highest rates among all other age groups. So when you're teen is asking for a ride of his own it's not only the car itself that will cost you some money - getting insurance for it will also get a good chunk from your family budget. But why do insurance companies charge teens with such high rates in the first place?

As you may guess, insurance companies set their rates according to the risk associated with covering a particular object, and that's the rule for all types of insurance. In case of car insurance, a great deal of risk depends on the person who is actually behind the wheel of the car being insured. Experience and behavior in traffic have a great deal of influence on the risk of getting into an accident. And statistically, young drivers are not very good with both experience and traffic behavior. They tend to make ...
... more mistakes and drive more aggressively than other age groups. Of course, there are good teen driver and horrible car owners who are older, but in general the statistics show that younger car owners have far more accidents and traffic rule violations than all other age groups. And that's why teens are charged with higher rates. But what can you do to make car insurance a bit cheaper for your teen? There are a couple of effective ways to do that!

First of all make sure that your kid goes to a defensive driving course and gets a certificate. With such a certificate you can always opt for a cut in premiums with most insurance providers. Car insurance companies will reduce the risk of insuring a driver when he or she has a defensive driving course certificate. Besides, it will also reduce the likelihood of your teen getting into an accident by own fault. And that's all what a parent can ask for, right?

Don't rush buying a separate policy for your young driver. If you have multiple cars in the household and share one policy for all of them, you will always get a good discount because insurance companies prefer having more cars under the same policy. Of course, including a teen to such a policy will automatically hike your premiums a bit but it will certainly be more advantageous than buying multiple policies for each driver or car.

And the last advice will certainly appeal to most parents. A lot of car insurance providers have special discounts for good students. This means that the student has to have an average of B and higher and to provide proof of this average on a regular basis. And that's certainly a great way to kill two birds with one stone: make your teen learn better and save some money on insurance for his car.
