In the UK, rules and guidelines have been developed to provide people the proper guidance and security when utilizing the mobility scooter. This is considered a vehicle albeit being used as a mobility aid. One must follow the necessary rules when using them to avoid fines, prevent hassling other people and protect themselves from problems that could happen in the long run.

There are numerous classes of mobility aids that are recognized in the UK. There are Class 1 manual wheel chairs, Class 2 powered wheelchairs and Class 3 Mobility Scooters in UK. The first 2 wheel chairs are recognized to have a speed limit of 4mph while Class 3 has a speed limit of 8mph. They are equipped to be used for road travel and by pavement. When driving on the road, users of these mobility aids should always be aware of traffic rules. There are no special treatments that are given to those who fail to follow the rules. When driving on pavement, they should also obey the rules and respect the other pedestrians.

When on pavements
People are ideally, on much safer ground. One should consider other people walking on the pavement or ...
... crossing the pedestrian area on the road. One should also be aware of the needs of other handicapped people especially with hearing and sight impairment. For powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters, it is a rule that they cannot move beyond the 4mph limit when in pedestrian lanes and pavements. This is to ensure that everybody is given their right of way and that there are no problems traveling across narrow pavements and pedestrians.

When on the road
In this case, you have to always be aware and alert. You are moving a lot slower than other vehicles since mobility scooters are designed only to move up to 8mph. If you wish to drive on the road, remember to drive only on the direction of the traffic. If there is an available pavement, you must use it as much as possible. The lights should be open at all times during the night and you should follow the same rules as everybody does. If you will be traveling at night, you must wear a reflective jacket and helmet if necessary. You must also follow standard road courtesy when moving on intersections or when giving the right of way or asking for the right of way. Do not swerve.

Following the rules for the Mobility Scooters in UK can help any person to do things they thought they could never do anymore. It is possible to live a normal life once again. By just following the rules and knowing your responsibilities, you should be safe using these mobility tools.
