Going Goa
There is something about the sea that touches me in ways not just ordinary. I feel that with every wave, the sea tells me tales of passion, adventure and excitement. However, when I recently heard that we had to attend a conference in Goa in the month of April, I squirmed. The heat would be terrible, I whined. To which my friend said, “It’s Goa! You would be staying in one of the Taj’s best beach resorts, so stop cribbing.” Ah well! Packing did not take much time. Coupled with the fact that a buzz of excitement was running through the entire office in anticipation of the trip, I was suddenly looking forward to meet the sea again. It was a happy group of 45 people from Delhi who boarded the plane to Goa. And the party had begun! As I dozed off, I dreamt of white sand beaches, rushing waves and perhaps, meeting a handsome stranger.
As we stepped out of Dabolim Airport, the humidity hit us. We sweated, groaned and rushed into the air conditioned comforts of the bus that was waiting to transport us to the Taj Fort Aguada Beach Resort. The ride through the beautiful streets took an hour. Soon the 73- acre complex overlooking ...
... the Arabian Sea greeted us, with its exotic tropical beauty and pristine beaches. The private beach behind the resort was buzzing with the excited chatter of members of our team, trying various water sports including para- sailing and banana rides. Some of us decided to visit the Calangute beach. But not before strolling around the small shops lining the road. A word of advice for the shopoholics here: please bargain as it’s worth it.
Soon after, my feet sunk into the soft sand, making it a little difficult for me to make my way to the open air restaurant. As the sea tickled our feet, the sea food tickled our appetites. And we were soon singing in a session of Antakshari . Jokes followed, shared liberally over glasses of beer and deep- fried prawns. Time flew by and before we realised, it was already past midnight. Finding transport at night in Goa, especially during the off season, can be a bit difficult. It’s advisable to travel in groups at night.
Party Time in Goa
The second day in Goa was spent attending the conference, the reason why we had flown to the pretty state.
However, we ended the day with a beach party. The dress code for the latter was anything bright and flowery and men beat women on this count in their zeal to look better, appearing in flowery beach shirts in all colours imaginable. The party rocked with a mix of English, Hindi, Punjabi and Marathi songs. At one point it seemed that the make-shift dance floor would not be able to take the poundings of over-enthusiastic dancers. After a rocking time, we were all tired but not ready to call it a day yet. So, in came RJ Ajay of Radio Meow, specially flown in from Mumbai. He belted out hit numbers and we sang along like there was no tomorrow.
The next day was already breaking — it was 5 a.m. — when I began to think of retiring. But just then, a colleague announced, “Guys, I am headed to the exclusive beach of Little Wagador. Do you want to come along?” He didn’t have to ask twice. Six of us on three bikes were soon zipping to the Little Wagador. The ride was something to remember forever. A winding road, a quiet cool weather and the morning hush broken only by the whistling of the wind.
