Qingdao Haiwan Bridge
World's longest over-water bridge, the 41.58km-long Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, opens to traffic in China's Qingdao on the last day of June. The bridge connects the city of Qingdao with Hongdao in Chengyang District and the suburban Huangdao District across the waters of the northern part of Jiaozhou Bay in Shandong Province.

Designed by Shandong High Speed Croup, the construction was started in December 2006 and finished in December 2010, after 14 years of planning researches since 1993, which employed 30,000 workers to build, and used 450,000 tons of steel and 2.3 million cubic meters of concrete, with a total investment of approximately 9 billion yuan. The open of the bridge will decrease traffic time from Qingdao to Huangdao District by at least 20 minutes and release pressure on the Jiaozhou Bay Expressway. Furthermore, the Qingdao Haiwan Bridge is the starting section of national expressway from Qingdao to Lanzhou and the key part of high way net of Shandong.

Jiaozhou Bay
Jiaozhou Bay is a sea gulf located on the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula in East China. It separates ...
... Huangdao District from Qingdao City and borders on Jiaozhou City and Jiaonan City. The bay is 32 km long and 27 km wide with a surface area of 362 km². It's a natural inlet of the Yellow Sea, with 10 to 15 meters depth to the seabed and deeper, dredged channels to three major ports around the bay, Qingdao, Huangdao and Hongdao, all ice-free during winter.

World's Longest Bridges over Water
The Qingdao Haiwan Bridge has become the longest bridge over water in the world, surpassed the previous world No.1, Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in southern Louisiana, USA, by about 4 kilometers longer. The third longest is Chinese Hangzhou Bay Bridge built in 2007, measuring 35.673 km (22 mi) long. And the forth is the Donghai Bridge, which connects Shanghai and the offshore Yangshan deep-water port in China, with a total length of 32.5 km (20.2 mi).
