Help is on the way for the more than 2.8 million impoverished children across Texas. Underprivileged children should now have better access to timely prescriptions, checkups, and other services deemed under a court settlement Monday by U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice.

Justice said, The court concludes the proposed corrective action plan is fair, reasonable and adequate.

The rate hike is intended to increase the number of healthcare providers who can treat children on Medicaid.

According to the Houston Chronical, About one-third of dentists, and about 62 percent of doctors, serve Medicaid patients, said Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Albert Hawkins. Although the number of doctors participating overall is higher than the number of dentists, the Texas Medical Association found only 38 percent of physicians accept all new Medicaid patients who seek care; another 26 percent limit the Medicaid patients they'll take; and 36 percent accept none.

San Antonio lawyer Susan Zin said, These children have been waiting for relief for years now. They need it now." Zin represents the children currently served by Medicaid.
