Discover The Intriguing Beauty Of The Wallpaper Damask

Damask wallpaper, when used in the right fashion, can lend a sense of elegance to any room in your home. It is one of the few designs that represents a piece of history in every print, utilizing art and designs centuries old from nations still in existence, as well as civilizations long since lost to dust of time. Not to be confused with floral wallpaper, it is often a more expensive choice of wallpaper to use, but the effect it gives could make it a worthy investment of your time and money.
A brief history
With designs dating back to the 12th century, the damask weave is one of the most recognizable patterns created throughout the world. Seen in tapestries, rugs and hand dyed linens for years, every pattern used is unique in every detail. At first glance, you might find similar patterns that look alike, but when examined closely, you will always find a difference, no matter how insignificant it might seem. Each damask weave is a pattern that is brought out of the fabric it is set upon by running it in an opposing wave from the natural flow of the fabric weave. Intricate, and difficult to do without years of study, ...
... it is a priceless artifact from years gone by.
The majority of the designs you will see on the wallpaper damask today emulate those designs that were originally created in 12th century Italy, France and Spain during the Renaissance. The inspiration for those patterns actually goes back even further, to the days of the Silk Road and the great artistic empires of Persia, India, China and the Ottoman Empire. Every artisan worth his fame left his mark in some fashion in those days, and each one is a miracle of geometrics, color and aesthetic illusions. To lump it in as floral wallpaper is almost an insult to its glorious history.
Modern designs
Today’s damask weaves used in wallpaper, fabric and linens vary from copies of the traditional patterns to more modern interpretations, full of geometric puzzles emblazoned with lavish colors. Where the styles of say 15th century France was full of fleur-de-lis, today’s version is more along te lines of an art deco representation of the same floral pattern, with a harder edge. Today’s patterns are all the more striking because of its use of color to it fullest, in varying shades within the same design.
There are two schools of thought for decorating with any damask design: foreground and background. Foreground thinking places the patterns in the forefront, on the fabric of the furniture. Background design, on the other hand, has the pattern being used in a larger way, covering an entire wall with its eye-catching design, with the furniture more neutral, so as to not detract from the effect. For example, enlarged print of intricate knot work done in a hypnotic lavender, on wallpaper fronted by furniture in complementary tones, muted in intensity, like beige, white, grey, or black, royal blue and deep purple.
