Located in South Florida, Biscayne Bay is a 200,000 underwater park. Fresh water flows from the mainland and mixes with the ocean's salt water, creating a unique breeding ground that is home to numerous plants and animals. Here, visitors can explore the bay by kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving while spending nights at some of the nearby Biscayne Bay hotels.

General Information about Biscayne

The nearest city to the north is Miami, which is where most of the Biscayne National Park hotels are located. The nearest southern city is Key Largo.

Entry into the Bay is free and it's open year-round, although the visitor's center is closed on Christmas day. Public transportation is not available directly to Biscayne Bay, but individuals with their own car or a boat can enter easily. Biscayne Bay hotels are not located inside the park, but many are only a short distance away.

What Makes Biscayne Bay Unique?

Biscayne Bay was formed from two different types of limestone. It has two distinct ecosystems, the hard bottom, which comes from the limestone and is a veritable underwater dessert, and the sea ...
... grass meadows, which includes patches of Johnson's sea grass, which is a threatened species.

The bay also includes mangroves trees, trees that have adapted to the salt water, with some species filtering the salt through their leaves and others through their roots to produce forests of strong, healthy trees. Several animals also make the bay home. At different times of year, visitors can see lobsters, pelicans, sea turtles, several species of birds and manatees. Coral also grows in abundance.

Activities at Biscayne Bay

Biscayne Bay is brimming with things to do. Guests can scuba dive, kayak and snorkel. They can fish and lobster. They can picnic and swim or just do some wildlife watching. Parts of Biscayne Bay have glass bottom boat trips, so you can relax on board and watch as the sea floor expands beneath you, revealing a whole new world. You can canoe along the mangrove forest, watching for manatees, who like the shallow waters. Boating is one of the most popular activities, since it's a water park. On two of the Keys, Boca Chita and Elliott, guests can park. Some trails are also available, where the park isn't covered with water.
