Inspiration is not only about big ideas. Little things can inspire us and those who work for us as well. And when a person is inspired the work gets done better. And simple elegant solutions to legacy problems that save a lot of effort are a great way to get inspired. Take for example the method for weighing heavy objects.

There was a time when the mechanical weighing scales were used. And the heavy weight would need to be raised to a platform which could require a lot of effort if the object was very heavy. The mechanical scales needed to have a mechanism beneath the platform on which the object had to be placed. This mechanism required some space so the platform could not be very low. And that meant that the object to be weighed had to be lifted to quite some distance vertically to be placed on the scale.

With the advent of the digital scales however the need for the mechanical mechanism beneath the platform was gone. And the digital components did not require much space at all. So now the platform on which the object to be weighed was to be placed, could be much lower. So low that now the name of the scale changed to a floor scale ...
... to signify that the platform of the scale was almost as good as lying on the floor itself.

Now the distance for the object to be lifted vertically was minimal and the effort required to do so was much less. This meant that the effort required to take the object off the scale was less as well. And there were other knock on benefits of going digital. The weight reading was no longer needed to be recorded manually and could be directly fed into a management information system. The new technology was more rugged, accurate and reliable which meant maintenance of the floor scales became easier. The benefits were so many when compared to the legacy scales that the new weighing equipment was truly inspirational in terms of how much better processes can get thanks to technological developments.
